Detailed description
Ouwél Hair Combs are handcrafted by skilled artisans from Guinea Bissau and Casamance, a family rooted in lumberjacking and fishing. The men create these unique hair accessories, while the women sell them at the weekly market in Kantioungou, located on the border of Bissau and Senegal.
Ouwél selects and purchases these combs from the women, then sends them to our workshop for finishing touches and logo crafting, all done by hand.
Made from "manki" wood, which refers to the mangrove shrubs, these combs embody the significance of mangroves in the region.
Importance of Mangroves
Mangroves play a vital role in their ecosystems, including:
- Adaptation to Environment: With long roots, they withstand variations in salinity, oxygen levels, and temperatures.
- Coastal Protection: The roots act as a barrier against erosion, alluvium, and tidal waves.
- Biodiversity Habitat: Mangroves are home to many threatened species, including fish (like Periophthalmus), birds (such as the red ibis), and various mammals (tigers, deer, monkeys).
- Artisanal Resources: They provide wood, honey, and medicinal plants.
- Fishing Resources: Mangroves support diverse marine life, including crabs, fish, shellfish, and oysters.
By choosing Ouwél Hair Combs, you support traditional craftsmanship while contributing to the preservation of vital mangrove ecosystems.
J'ai acheté ce peigne la semaine dernière et j'en suis super contente. Il passe facilement dans mes cheveux sans les casser. Je le recommande !

How Senegalese Artisanal Products are Made
The production of artisanal products in Senegal involves a blend of traditional techniques and local resources. Artisans start by selecting the finest materials, whether it be vibrant fabrics for clothing or durable clay for pottery. In the case of pottery, artisans shape the clay by hand, often using age-old methods that have been refined over time. For textiles, weaving is done on traditional looms, allowing for complex designs that tell a story. Throughout the process, artisans take great pride in their work, ensuring that each product not only meets high-quality standards but also reflects the cultural identity of Senegal. The result is a range of handcrafted items that are both functional and deeply rooted in tradition.
